Svalbard - Winter Activities 2016/17
Please note that these activities mostly run every other day and the schedule can vary slightly throughout the season. Please let us know which activities are of interest and we can advise on the scheduling.
Svalbard Northern Lights Activities (October to February)
Northern Lights Evening
During the polar nights on Svalbard the northern lights can be seen 24hrs per day. Head to Camp Barentz away from the artificial light around Longyearbyen. Learn more about the science behind the northern lights as you enjoy a hearty wilderness meal. Fingers crossed for some polar fireworks!
Price: £109 per adult / £55 per child (8-14yrs). Duration: 3hrs.
Availability: 15 October to 14 February. Suitability: Not suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
Equipment: Bring along warm clothing and walking boots.
Northern Lights Snowmobile
An atmospheric snowmobile tour of the Advent Fjord, illuminated hopefully by glittering stars and northern lights. Includes snacks and warm drinks.
Price: £215 per driver / £98 per passenger (min 8yrs). Duration: 3hrs.
Availability: 14 November to 28 February. Suitability: Not suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Snow Cat - Northern Lights
You won’t miss the Snow Cat when it arrives to pick you up! Head into the darkness, out of town and along the valley. Wonderful scenery and with luck some northern lights. Includes snacks and warm drinks.
Price: £76 per adult / £39 per child (2-13yrs). Duration: 2hrs.
Availability: 25 November to 28 February. Suitability: Suitable for almost everyone.
Info: Most of the tour you will be in the snow cat.
Northern Lights Husky
Sit back and relax or drive in pairs surrounded by the mountains of the Advent Valley. Northern lights could be glimmering over head when you stop for a break and turn off the headlamps. As your surroundings are covered in snow you can easily see long distances.
Price: £142 per adult / £72 per child (8-12yrs). Duration: 4hrs.
Availability: 1 November to 10 February. Suitability: Average fitness required.

Dark Silence on Snowshoes
One of the best ways to get up close and personal to nature, and Svalbard is one of the best places to do it! Float on top of virgin snow. The route is weather dependent but options include the Longyearbyen Glacier or Breinose Mountain.
Price: £94 per adult (min 10yrs). Duration: 5hrs.
Availability: 31 October to 1 March. Suitability: Average fitness required.
Info: Snowshoes, poles, headlamp included. Bring good walking shoes warm clothes and a small rucksack.
Sightseeing around Longyearbyen
This is the perfect way to get an introduction to Longyearbyen and the surrounding area, with a knowledgeable local guide.
Price: £35 per person. Duration: 2hrs.
Availability: Daily at 4pm

Svalbard Winter Activities (February to May)
Snowmobiles
Safari to Camp Barentz
A great introduction to snowmobiling on Svalbard. Driving at a relaxed tempo for 10km to the base of mine 7. Learn about the history of mining, WWII and early scientific research in the far north. Reindeer are a common sight. A warm drink is served at the camp.
Price: £181 per driver / £98 per passenger. Duration: 3hrs.
Availability: 2 March to 15 May.
Info: Snowmobile suit, helmet, boots and mittens included. You must be in possession of a driving licence for car or motorbike. Min age is 8yrs as a passenger or 4yrs as a passenger in a trailer.
Tempelfjorden
A fantastic snowmobiling adventure, suitable for those with no previous snowmobile experience. On this trip you will cover 70km, and enjoy a phenomenal views over Tempelfjord and towards the might Tempel Mountain.
Price: £318 per driver / £171 per passenger Duration: 4hrs.
Availability: 21 January to 16 May.

Barentsburg
Experience the wonderful nature and the Russian mining settlement Barentsburg. Head up Todalen then west towards Barentsburg. The journey then takes us on to Colesdalen and along the coast past Kapp Laila and Kapp Heer before arriving at the Russian mining village. Lunch is served in the Russian Kitchen.
Price: £340 per driver / £171 per passenger Duration: 9hrs.
Availability: 13 Febrauary to 16 May.

This is an adult only tour and you must have previous snowmobile experience. Lunch included. Min of 2 snowmobiles must be booked for this tour to go ahead. Approx. distance is 190km.
Pyradmiden
A long and challenging snowmobile trip, but with a destination which is worth the trip: Cross the frozen fjords of Spitsbergen and visit the abandoned Russian town of Pyramiden! Pyramiden was previously the largest settlement on Svalbard with about 1500 inhabitants. The town was abandoned in 1998, but the buildings and infrastructure is still intact.
Price: £428 per driver / £171 per passenger Duration: 10hrs.
Availability: 11 March to 13 May.

Husky Excursions
Bolterdalen
Drive your own dog team, or sit back and enjoy the ride, through Bolterdalen's exciting and varied landscape! Everyone helps to harness the excited huskies to the sleds before gliding across the snow and ice in the Bolter Valley.
Price: £142 per adult / £72 per child (8-12yrs). Duration: 4hrs.
Availability: 10 February to 25 May daily at 8.30am and 3pm.
Info: Snowmobile suit, hat, boots and mittens included. Min age 8yrs. If you choose to drive a team of huskies you need a good sense of balance and reasonable fitness.
Other excursions
Snowcat and Ice Cave Tour
From the big Longyear glacier right outside town, we descend into the ice and enter a fascinating cave. Equipped with a headlamp we walk in along the passages formed by the melted water under the glacier. Fascinating formations of ice and stones is a breath-taking experience.
Price: £87 per adult / £43 per child (8-15yrs). Duration: 3hrs.
Availability: 21 January to 16 May
Info: Walking boots are required. Not suitable for those who do not like tight spaces or have restricted movement.
