Escape - Swedish Winter Style!

A 7 night full board winter escape to Sweden. Experience the magic of isolation in a small picturesque village somewhere in middle Sweden.

Overview

Experience the magic of isolation in a small picturesque village somewhere in middle Sweden, close to the town of Ockelbo, 2 hours north of Stockholm.

This holiday is about snow, silence, remoteness and traditions surrounding rural Sweden. A typical Swede works in a big city, such as Stockholm, but will have a country house somewhere by a lake, easily accessible within 2 or 3 hours of Stockholm, such as Ockelbo - a place to escape, relax, recharge the batteries and forget about work and big city life for a few days. Traditional Swedish activities include skiing, ice skating and snowshoeing and then enjoy a coffee and pastry in the wilderness.

On this holiday you will live like a Swede! Traditional activities include cross country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing and ice fishing. Fires and fika are another essential ingredient to Swedish life. Fika is simply coffee and a pastry, often in the wilderness at this time of year.

The highlights
- Quite escape in Sweden
- Direct flights to Stockholm from the UK
- All meals and activities included
- Fairy-tale snow-covered Swedish forests

Itinerary

Meals
All your meals are included during your stay at Stilleben from the evening meal on the first day to breakfast on the last. Where possible ingredients are ecological, locally sourced and locally produced. An important part of our responsible travel program.

Sunday
Fly from the UK to Sweden or join this tour having spent a couple of nights in Stockholm.

1035 from London Heathrow, landing 1405 at Stockholm Arlanda.

Approx. 2hr transfer from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Åmot and Stilleben.

Check-in. Time to relax.

Introduction and welcome evening meal.

Monday
It’s time to make some decisions as you enjoy the ecological breakfast buffet.

Browse through a diverse range of activities and plan your day.
Choices include:
- Anywhere between 3 and 18 km cross-county skiing.
- Fat biking.
- Numerous frozen lakes to enjoy some outdoor skating.
- Your hosts Jeroen, Sam and Björn will be there to guide you through their winter wonderland!

These activities are all included!

Tuesday
Ever-present candles and subtle lighting provide a warming contrast to the winter darkness; red wooden cottages are at their most attractive when embedded in snow; snow hangs heavy in the tall pine trees, the pure white of mother nature brightens the dark surroundings; the log fires crackle and burn.

The morning is about going back to basics and learning how to bake Swedish flat bread (tunnbröd) in an old stone oven, in a traditional baker’s cabin or ‘bagarstugan’.

Wednesday
After the excess, it’s time to work it off!

With your guide follow some local snowshoe trails for 3 to 4 hours.

Snowshoeing is easy to pick up and allows you to almost float on deep powdery snow. They allow to explore otherwise inaccessible terrain, get up close and personal to nature and listen to birds, other animal noises and the gentle breeze in the trees.

Thursday
A magical adventure in one of southern Sweden's areas of genuine wilderness.

Learn how to be a musher! Following some simple instructions, hop-on and guide your own eager team of 4-legged friends. A unique insight into the lifestyle of dogsledding.

You will prepare the dog teams and guide them through nature reserves where it looks exactly the same as 1000 years ago. This is one of Sweden’s most diverse areas of wild nature. With some luck you will see wolf, fox, lynx, moose and wolverine tracks. It is not uncommon for eagles to soar overhead.

Friday
Ice fishing or “pimplar” is fun for all ages and the many lakes around Åmot are the perfect location for a nice day out on the frozen water.

After instructions, it’s time to fish from a freshly-cut hole in the ice and try your luck. During your activity the guides will adopt a catch-and-release policy.

Afterwards it's time to immerse yourself in the stylish floating sauna and outdoor hot tub, followed by a hearty evening meal.

Saturday
The final day takes you back in time.

Follow your guides through an evening of fairy tales and culture about yesteryear. Hundreds of years ago, the Swedish Vikings crossed paths with the European pilgrims in Åmotsbruk during the Middle Ages.

Listen to the gentle tones and adventurous tales these pine forests have to tell, accompanied by flavours of the times.

Sunday
Breakfast and transfer back to Stockholm Arlanda Airport or continue your holiday with Simply Sweden (eg. stay in Stockholm).
1605 take off from Stockholm Arlanda, 1745 land in Heathrow.

Accommodation

Stilleben - Åmot

A cosy hotel which was once the village school in the typical Swedish village of Åmot. It is surrounded by hills and forests and is easily accessible from Stockholm.

Stilleben is a place for quiet reflection. You won't find TVs here but you will find endless nature trails and plenty of local wildlife. It is not unusual to see moose and deer and although you are unlikely to see them, you will probably find traces of bear, wolf and lynx.

The old school has just 6 bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms so you can be sure of a small and personal experience. Don't forget your swimming costume as your stay at Stilleben includes 2hrs in the hottub and sauna, located by the lake.
