Marstrand

Marstrand is an island north west of Gothenburg within the Bohuslän region. With its long history and reputation as a vibrant tourist destination Marstrand has much to offer.

Over the centuries Marstrand has witnessed many battles as Denmark, Norway and finally Sweden have fought over the right to rule this little island just 30 minutes from Gothenburg. Sweden finally took control in 1658, but battles still raged. Sweden sunk many of its own naval vessels in the harbour to prevent the enemy seizing the ships and using them against Sweden.

Historically herring fishing provided the town with financial rewards but towards the end of the 19th Century tourism began to take hold as the rich, famous and odd royal flocked to Marstrand for the new fashion of sea bathing. With galleries, museums and historic monuments Marstrand is now a thriving summer destination for tourists and sailors alike. Marstand is also host to a range of other activities including hot baths, diving and sea kayaking.

The Grand Hotel Marstrand has recently been renovated to a high standard and retains many of its original features. With just 22 rooms and 6 suites early booking is essential.
