Character of Sweden
Dalarna is one of the most traditional areas of Sweden. It is scattered with towns and villages surrounding Lake Siljan and typical red wooden 'stugor'.
Overview
Often called 'Miniature Sweden' this beautiful area has typical red wooden houses, unbeatable views, deep culture and is the home of the Dala Horse (no Swedish home is complete without one). One of Sweden's most famous rivers, The Dalälven (520km long) runs from the Swedish mountains close to the Norwegian border, through Lake Siljan to the Baltic Sea in the east. Lake Siljan was created by a meteorite 365 million years ago!
The centre of this holiday is Lake Siljan and the area surrounding Mora, which is just four hours northwest of Stockholm. It is an interesting, diverse geographical and cultural area. Copper is a common mineral in Sweden, especially in the Dalarna area. The houses in this region are often red as the red colouring is a by-product of copper mining. This was considerably cheaper than other colours and is now widely recognised as a traditional colour for Swedish houses.
Seasonal attractions in the Siljan area include Europe's largest bear park, many water based activities / excursions on Lake Siljan, the Inland Railway, the Zorn Museum, world class ice hockey and many nature reserves. Siljan is also home to the world’s largest cross-country ski race, the Vasaloppet. A leisurely walk and mushroom picking in the colourful autumnal forests are extremely popular in September and October.

Klockgården Hotel - Dalarna
The village of Tällberg is perched on the edge of Lake Siljan and is a typical old-fashioned Swedish village. Wooden houses are painted red on the shores of Lake Siljan and in the cultural province of Dalarna. Tällberg is an idyllic village surrounded by beautiful nature and is a wonderful place to spend a warm summer’s day.
Klockgården is a hamlet within Tällberg, with 20 old wooden houses nestling on the sloping shores of Lake Siljan. Each room has individual character and has been carefully modernised. Several rooms have a balcony, open fire, sauna and jacuzzi. Klockgården’s entertainment programme includes music and folk dancing, and arts and crafts exhibitions, especially during the summer.
Fryksås Hotel - Dalarna
An intimate hotel with a unique atmosphere and a magnificent view of Lake Siljan and the surrounding countryside. Make your trip memorable and visit this 16th century rural environment close to the wilderness where farmers used to bring their livestock to graze during the summer. Fryksås has 150 old timber buildings, so called 'fäbodar' from the 1500s. This is one of Sweden's oldest and largest fäbodar collections. Some of these have been restored and Fryksås now offers three types of accommodation: hotel rooms, modern cabins, and exclusive cabins with jacuzzi and sauna. In the famous restaurant specialties include game, fish and home-made produce.
