Northern Lights Cruise & Lofoten Islands

The idea of combining our Northern Lights Cruise and the wonderful Lofoten Islands came to us following a conversation with one of our guests. What could be better than a 4 night northern lights cruise over the top of Norway and 3 nights in the spectacular surroundings of the Lofoten Islands?

On this holiday through the northern part of the spectacular Norwegian Fjords, several hundred kilometers inside the Arctic Circle, there are exciting activities, unbelievable scenery and some of the best possibilities to see the Northern Lights. Snowmobiles, huskies and the top of continental Europe (The North Cape) all feature on this short cruise.

The Lofoten Islands are a large group of islands located on a rocky peninsular inside the Arctic Circle. Dramatic mountain scenery in an outstanding Arctic marine environment. The Lofoten Islands are steeped in tradition and history. Fishing, Viking History and the sami culture all have an important part to play in everyday life on the Lofoten Islands.

Day 1 - Tromso
Fly from the UK to Tromso (the capital of Northern Norway) and stay in the centrally located Hotel Bryggen. The centre of Tromso is a short transfer from the airport, and your hotel is just 50m from the departure point of your Hurtigruten cruise.
Depending on your arrival there may be some time for an evening Northern Lights activity.

Hotel Bryggen - Tromso

Hotel Bryggen is practically next to the airport bus in the centre of Tromso and is situated on the quay side in Tromso harbour. Relax in the rooftop jacuzzi with views across the harbour to the spectacular Arctic Cathedral. Hotel Bryggen has recently been refurbished and is one of Northern Norways leading hotels. Tromso is also the gateway to Northern Norway and the launch pad for many of our Norway northern lights holidays.

Days 2 & 3 - Tromso to Kirkenes (Fjords Cruise)

A free day to explore Tromso. Perhaps enjoy the wilderness with an excursion or activity. Approx 6.30pm departure on your 4 night half board Hurtigruten Cruise through the northern part of the Norwegian Fjords. You can specify inside or outside cabin and your cabin will be allocated on boarding the ship in Tromso.

Days 4 to 6 - Kirkenes to Svolvaer (Fjords Cruise)
The highlights of this cruise are of course the Northern Lights if mother nature wishes to share with us. Other items on the list include some great excursions the North Cape a snowmobile or husky tour and the Kirkenes Snow Hotel. Activities from 5A to 8F are available on your cruise.

Admire the stunning fjords scenery as you weave between the Vesterålen islands and see Trollfjorden. Early evening arrival in Svolvaer (day 6). Transfer to your traditional Rorbeur (fisherman's cabins) in Svolvaer.

Days 6 to 9
Svinoya Rorbeur

One of the highlights of Norway. The Lofoten Islands are quite simply breathtaking. You will be surrounded by some of Norway's most impressive scenery in a dramatic marine and mountain environment. Make sure you make the most of your stay and book an activity or two. We recommend between 3 and 5 nights on Lofoten to give you the best chances of seeing the northern lights, and the opportunity to explore this magical part of Norway.

There are 30 original or newly built Rorbeur (fishermen's cabins) close to the waters edge. Each cabin has been furnished to a modern standard and is located on the small islands just outside Svolvaer. The islands are connected to Svolvaer by bridge and it is just 600m to the centre. They are well equipped with living room / kitchen, bedroom(s) and bathroom with WC and shower. The cabins have between 1 and 3 bedrooms with space for between 2 and 6 people in double / twin beds.

Visiting the Lofoten Islands during the winter months is so much more than just seeing the Northern Lights. Soak up the silence, admire the scenery and take the opportunity to head out into nature either with a guided hike, a nature safari or by kayak.
