Northern lights and Mother Nature at her best: spectacular scenery at Lyngen Lodge, views across the Lyngen Fjord towards the Lyngen Alps; a scenic cruise weaving between the islands of the Vesterlån and Lofoten Archipelagos; dramatic marine and mountain scenery of the Lofoten Islands.

Your visit to Lyngen Fjord and Lyngen Lodge is about being outside, experiencing the outdoor way of life Norway has to offer and enjoying the cosy luxury of the lodge itself, including the outdoor Jacuzzi, with unrivalled panoramic views across the fjord, and the crackling open fire.

The Lofoten Islands are also about the outdoors and incredible nature and scenery. This large group of islands is located on a rocky peninsular inside the Arctic Circle. Dramatic mountain scenery in an outstanding Arctic marine environment. The Lofoten Islands are steeped in tradition and history. Fishing, Viking history and Sami culture all have an important part to play in everyday life on the Lofoten Islands.

Accommodation

Hurtigruten Coastal Steamer - typical cabins

A fleet of 11 ships cruise the beautiful Norwegian fjords taking you through breathtaking scenery and giving you the opportunity to see natural phenomena, such as the midnight sun and the Northern Lights from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the far north.

The journey is quite spectacular and you won't spend much time in your cabin. You must be on deck or in the panoramic lounges to witness this jaw-dropping scenery. Click on the photo to the left to see the typical cabins on board.

You are generally accommodated in an unspecified outside cabin which may have llimited views. We do recommend upgrading to a cabin with an unobstructed view.

Lyngen Lodge - Northern Norway

A touch of luxury and comfort with a very personal touch in a cosy lodge environment in quite simply awesome surroundings.

Lyngen Lodge is located in the Lyngen Fjord offering spectacular views across the fjord and of the Lyngen Alps. The transfer from Tromsø airport is part of the whole experience. It includes 2 ferry journeys across the Lyngen and Ulls Fjords and the Breivik valley.

Lyngen Lodge is located 30 meters above sea level and offers views over the Lyngen Fjord and across the Lyngen Alps. There are 8 cosy en suite rooms, a comfortable lounge with a welcoming open fire place and a sauna and outdoor hot tub, perfect for relaxing in as the Northern Lights provide the evening entertainment. Serious consideration has been given to efficiency and insulation. Grass roofs provide excellent insulation and go-thermal heating energy a green and form of heating.

Your meals are an important part of your stay and you will be catered for on a full board basis. Fish is a key ingredient throughout Norway and in this part of Norway so is moose and reindeer.

Svinøya Rorbuer (Winter)

These traditional fishermen's cabins (rorbuer) offer a warm cosy welcome deep inside the Arctic Circle. Located just 600m from the centre of  Svolvær on a group of small islands Svinøya is conveniently connected to the mainland by bridge. Between October and March  it is common for guests of Svinøya to see the northern lights from these cabins.

Børsen Spiseri is a famous fish restaurant (and part of Svinøya), attracting customers from across the Lofoten Islands. Fishing is a key industry on the Lofoten Islands and cod is a local speciality. Fish is a key feature of most Norwegian dishes but you will also find traditional Scandinavia ingredients such as moose and reindeer.

There are 30 original or newly built Rorbuer (fishermen's cabins) close to the waters edge. Each cabin has been furnished to a modern standard and is located on the small islands just outside Svolvær. They are well equipped with living room / kitchen, bedroom(s) and bathroom with WC and shower. The cabins have between 1 and 3 bedrooms with space for between 2 and 6 people in double / twin beds. Wifi is available in the cabins.

Northern Lights Presentation
Included in 3 & 4 night stays
When you have checked in and enjoyed a welcome evening meal on the first evening of your stay at Lyngen Lodge you will have the opportunity to attend a Northern Lights presentation: learn about the science and the myths surrounding the northern lights and pick up some photography tips from the local experts!

Dog Sledding
Duration: 5hr total (1hr30 husky sledding - 30min transfer each way)
Included in 3 & 4 night stays
At the southern end of the Lyngen Alps, close to Finnish boarder, the mountains rise steeply from empty snow covered valleys. This region hosts a spectacular dog sledding adventure into the. You will drive two per sled and take turns to drive. The scenic trail winds through the valleys that capture the low Arctic sun between the high jagged peaks. Lunch is served around an open fire in large tents.

High Frozen Lakes
Duration: 5 hours
Included in 3 & 4 night stays
The ice fishing adventure is located up on a mountain plateau with commanding views over high peaks and fjords. The frozen lake is covered in 50cm of ice and snow and accessed from the valley below by guided snowmobile. The journey to the lake takes 30 minutes through snow covered birch tree forests. Once at the lake, a shelter camp is made and ice holes drilled through the ice so fishing can begin. The ice is so thick that it is possible to make a fire on the ice and cook the fresh fish directly at the camp. Guests will also be able to explore the surrounding area on snowmobiles in between fishing sessions.

Snowshoeing
Duration 2 to 4 hours

Directly from the lodge, snow shoeing enables all guests to access the Arctic frozen forests, see rare animal tracks of moose, lynx and wolverine and reach high viewpoints to see the entire Lyngen Peninsula national park from above the forest line. After learning the simple techniques, our guide will lead guests on a historical and natural journey that provides deeper appreciation of this spectacular region.

Sea Safari, sightseeing and Havnnes Stockfish harbour
Duration: 4 hours
Replace snowshoeing and a supplement of £149 per person
Norwegian culture is split equally between the land and the sea, and on board the Spirit of Lyngen boat you will experience a wide diversity of fjord life. Begin with dolphin spotting at Spåkenes nature reserve, visit the historic stock fish drying process on the island of Uløya and cruise across the fjord to the ice cave and the sheer towering rock walls that plunge into the ocean. Europe’s largest eagle is the Sea Eagle, Havn Ørn, is regularly seen hunting for fish.

Svolvær - Lofoten Islands 2017/18 (Winter)

Visiting the Lofoten Islands during the winter months is so much more than just seeing the northern lights. Soak up the silence, admire the scenery and take the opportunity to head out into nature either with a guided hike, a nature safari or by kayak.

Guided Fishing Village Walk
Svinøya is the oldest part of Svolvær, and has been a thriving,vibrant fishing village since 1828. Why do people live in Lofoten? What is stockfish and what do we do with it? How did the fishermen live 100 years ago, and how did a "rorbu" actually look like?
Did you know that the first shop in Svolvær is still intact?

Lofoten Nature Safari
One of the most popular activities. Visit the Vertfjord and the beautiful landscape around Trollfjord. Start with a short lecture about the local geology and climate. Board the boat and head out for scenery and bird watching. There is an excellent chance of seeing sea eagles. It may also be possible to see killer and pilot whales. Lunch is served on board the boat. Please note this there is a minimum of 6 people for this tour to go ahead. Cancellations of this tour are rare as this tour is very popular. If you do book this tour and it does not go ahead we will of course make a full refund.

The Aurora Jäger
Aurora hunt by our local aurora guide. He never gives up, and finds the aurora almost every time. He will take you to his secret spots. Be prepared for a long night, hours in the car, and waiting outside in all kinds of weather and temperatures. The Aurora Jäger will go to extreme lengths to find lady Aurora. Bring warm clothes, camera, tripod, head light, extra batteries for camera.
Time: 9pm for 3½ to 6hrs depending on conditions.

Lofoten Panorama
Explore a dramatic coastline, historical fishing villages and white sand beaches surrounded by rugged mountains with an expert guide. Several photo stops along the way with breath-taking views. Lunch is served in Præstengbrygga in Kabelvåg.

Northern Lights Hunt
With a driver / guide (who will help you with your camera) head away from Svinøya and leave the artificial light behind. Head into the wilderness that provides an amazing back drop for the northern lights. Many of our northern lights pictures are taken from the Lofoten Islands.

RIB Sea Eagle Safari
A 2hrs (1hr30 on board) RIB excursion from Svinøya to Trollfjord & the surrounding area. There are great chances of seeing sea eagles (we saw 3 when we did this tour!). Experience some of the most beautiful scenery around the Lofoten Islands from the unique perspective of the sea.
Time: 11am 2hrs.

Winter Sea Kayaking
One of the best ways to get up close and personal with nature. Your individual skills and experience, and of course the weather on the day will dictate the location of this tour but no previous experience is necessary. Includes specialist equipment.

Snowshoe Hike
Venture into the Lofoten Wilderness and mountains. Amazing scenery as you admire the stunning mountain and marine environment. Bring good hiking boots and a small back pack with snacks and drinks.

Lofoten by Horse

Car Rental
Rent a car locally from approx. 900NOK per day. This gives you the flexibility to get out there and really see the sheer beauty of the Lofoten Islands. You can stop where you want, take your time to take pictures and also go on your own Northern Lights chase. We can advise you on the best places to go!

Lofoten by Horse
Ride along the sandy beaches of Lofoten, past relics from the Viking era and explore the true scenic nature of the Lofoten Islands. Includes transfer to the stables. No experience necessary. Bring warm clothing and your camera. Max weight 110kg.
Time: 10am for 4hrs (11am for 2hrs with own transport).

Car Rental
Rent a car locally from approx. 900NOK per day. This gives you the flexibility to get out there and really see the sheer beauty of the Lofoten Islands. You can stop where you want, take your time to take pictures and also go on your own Northern Lights chase. We can advise you on the best places to go!
