Jokkmokk Christmas Market

Experience the magic of an authentic Christmas market, the Sami & reindeer culture and the pretty Lapland town of Jokkmokk.

Overview

Introduction ** New for Winter 2017/18 **
Travel to Swedish Lapland and visit one of the prettiest towns in Sweden – Jokkmokk. Jokkmokk is a small town, with just 3,000 inhabitants, located just 7km inside the Arctic Circle, surrounded by dense snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and thousands of reindeer.

The Christmas Market
Indigenous Sami people have been travelling to Jokkmokk for over 400 years, to sell their reindeer wares, warm clothing, jewellery, trinkets and crafts. The Christmas Market, in its current form, first appeared in Jokkmokk in 2016 and proved to be incredibly popular. Simply Sweden is extremely proud to give you the opportunity to visit one of the most unique, authentic and culturally sensitive Christmas Markets.

History & Culture
The Sami have been herding their reindeer through the Boreal Forest surrounding Jokkmokk, to the mountains of Laponia, for thousands of years. Their traditional nomadic way of life is threatened by big industrial projects such as hydroelectric dams, railway lines and mining. Listen to their stories of survival through the years and visit Ájtte, the Sami and Mountain Museum (included in your holiday) to learn more about this rich and intriguing culture and history.

Activities & Excursions
Naturally, cultural Sami activities are an important part of your stay here, but you will also find more traditional activities such as northern lights snowmobiles and huskies.
