Culture Of Lapland - Jokkmokk

** NEW FOR WINTER 2017/18 **. Explore the hidden depths of the culture of Swedish Lapland with an authentic, small and personal holiday to Jokkmokk.

Overview

New for Winter 2017/18

One of the most authentic towns of Swedish Lapland is the pretty northern town of Jokkmokk. The surrounding forests and mountains are also one of the largest, untouched wilderness areas of Europe. There are just 3,000 inhabitants in Jokkmokk and it is located just 7km inside the Arctic Circle, surrounded by dense snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and thousands of reindeer.

The Sami have been herding their reindeer through the Boreal Forest surrounding Jokkmokk, to the mountains of Laponia, for thousands of years. Their traditional nomadic way of life is threatened by big industrial projects such as hydroelectric dams, railway lines and mining. Listen to their stories of survival through the years and visit Ájtte, the Sami and Mountain Museum (included in your holiday) to learn more about this rich and intriguing culture and history.

Naturally, cultural Sami activities are an important part of your stay here, but you will also find more traditional activities such as snowmobiles and huskies.

Grab this chance with both hands to be at one with nature, breath the crisp clean air and admire starry night skies (and with luck the northern lights) deep inside Swedish Lapland.
