The only way to see the real Norway!
Flying around Norway is something special. It is often the only practical way to reach remote areas and is treated as a 'bus service' by the locals. The planes are small and operate out of small airports and we believe this is one of the best ways to capture the real Norway.
When flying in Northern Norway here are some tips! These flights have plenty of leg room, and have been specifically designed for the unpredictable weather of Northern Norway. There is free seating, so grab a window seat if you can. The views from the windows are glorious. If possible have your camera with you during the flight.
The highlights of this holiday
The highlights of this tour include the beautiful city of Bergen, the amazing Lofoten Islands, whale watching, the Kongsfjord Guest House and the interesting history and culture in Kirkenes at the Russian border.
Let the itinerary do the talking!
Itinerary - available 19Jun to 27Aug
Days 1 to 4 - Svinoya Rorbeur (Svolvaer)
Fly into Bergen. The best flights are currently from London and Aberdeen. Afternoon flight from Bergen to Svolvaer (via Bodo), crossing the arctic circle and into the land of the midnight sun. The flight between Bodo and Svolvaer is quite spectacular as you fly over the Lofoten Wall. Transfer to Svinoya.
One of the highlights of Norway is The Lofoten Islands which are quite simply breathtaking. It's worth the extra effort it takes to get here. You will be surrounded by some of Norway's most impressive scenery in a dramatic marine and mountain environment.
Svinoya has 30 original or newly built Rorbeur (fishermen's cabins) close to the water's edge. Each cabin has been furnished to a modern standard and is located on the small islands just outside Svolvaer. The islands are connected to Svolvaer by bridge and it is just 600m to the centre. They are well equipped with living room / kitchen, bedroom(s) and bathroom with WC and shower. The cabins have between 1 and 3 bedrooms with space for between 2 and 6 people in double / twin beds.
Simply Sweden Recommendations
Svinoya is home to the famous fish restaurant Børsen Spiseri. Fish with some of the best in the business, take an RIB tour, make a visit to Trollfjorden, go on a sea eagle safari, sea kayak, rent a bike, follow a hiking trail, rent a car locally and take a drive along the Lofoten National Tourist Route. Plenty to do!
Days 4 to 6 - Andenes
Head for Andenes (flight times 1145-1320 via Bodo) and whale watching with a whale guarantee. Andenes Airport is practically in centre of town!
Hotel Marena is a small comfortable hotel in the centre of Andenes with just 29 rooms. Each room reflects the surrounding nature with photos from Espen Tollefsen, a famous local photographer.
Your whale safari departs from the harbour at 1630 on your day of arrival in Andenes or 0930 on your 2nd day. We offer you a whale guarantee. If you do not see a whale during your tour you will be re-booked onto another departure or given a refund for this part of the tour. With spotters high on the cliffs and acoustic instruments to listen for whales we are confident you will see a whale as we have a success rate of 95%!
The chances are you will see a sperm whale, possibly other species too. The sperm whale can live up to 80yrs, grow to 20m long and weigh anything up to 75 tonnes. Our guides in Andenes have been researching whales for many years and it is important to remember we are visitors to their home. Our guides will never chase the whales, and will simply let the whales come to you. Other whale species you may see include the killer whale, the hump back whale, the pilot whale and the harbour porpoise.
Days 6 to 8
A day at leisure or perhaps your whale safari depending on your itinerary. A short 30min afternoon flight (1625-1655) across the sea to Tromso. As you fly into Tromso you fly between mountains and the city of Tromso is clearly visible from the air.
Tromso is the focal point of many concerts, festivals and sporting events north of the Arctic Circle. It boasts the Arctic Cathedral and the highest concentration of old wooden houses in Northern Norway. It is full of culture and history (especially surrounding WWII) and has a wide range of activities.
Hotel Bryggen - Tromso
Hotel Bryggen is practically next to the airport bus in the centre of Tromso and is situated on the quay side in Tromso harbour. Relax in the rooftop jacuzzi with views across the harbour to the spectacular Arctic Cathedral. Hotel Bryggen has recently been refurbished and is one of Northern Norways leading hotels. Tromso is also the gateway to Northern Norway and the launch pad for many of our Norway northern lights holidays.
Simply Sweden recommendations
Take a boat tour through the harbour and around Tromso. Rent a kayak, dive into the Sami culture, go fishing, take a photography course, hike, visit the Arctic Cathedral or Northern Lights centre, go fishing or choose cycle rental from the tourist office.
Days 8 to 10 - Kongsfjord Guest House (Full Board)
Catch your Wideroe flight between Tromso and Berlevåg (1030-1305). It stops 2 or 3 times on route to pick up and drop off.
This is one of the hidden gems in Northern Norway, offering sheer wilderness, sheer beauty and sheer emotion when you see how the locals earn a crust, live and survive in such a beautiful yet hostile part of the world. You have to like nature, like being outdoors and not be afraid of the weather to enjoy Northern Norway. Nothing is predictable except the unpredictability of the weather!
Kongsfjord is a family run guest house and Åse is your host. She was born and grew up in the houses that are now part of Kongsfjord Guest House. All the rooms are en suite or have a private shower / WC. There is a part of Åse in the guest house as she has carefully renovated and put her heart and soul into each house. Her partner, Tryggen, is the chef and an expert in local traditional food. You will be surprised by the international community that has settled in Kongsfjord, but you will soon understand why.
Come and stand on the edge of the world with Simply Sweden in Kongsfjord.

Bird watching is also extremely popular.
Days 10 to 12
Early breakfast and 30 min transfer to the airport. Your flight to Kirkenes departs at 0820. There can be up to 3 stops on route.
Your hotel in Kirkenes is the spacious and modern Thon Hotel on the water front in the centre of Kirkenes.
Kirkenes was practically destroyed by the Germans during WWII before the Russians came to the rescue. The Germans were deceived into thinking the town had been abandoned but the locals had fled to the local mine and were hiding underground. Hear more about their amazing story locally.
Simply Sweden Recommendation
Dig deeper into the history of WWII - it's fascinating. Dive for King Crabs. Visit the Russian border and if you intend to visit Russia make sure you have the appropriate documents before you travel. Visit a reindeer park or take a river boat tour along the Russian border.
