Millennium Tour 2011/12Here at Simply Sweden we have designed a tour specifically for those interested in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and the investigative journalist Mikael Blomqvist. The Swedish version of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo' has been a global success and became a best selling foreign language film in the UK. The Hollywood version (featuring Daniel Craig as Blomqvist) was filmed on location in Stockholm, Uppsala and other remote parts of Sweden. This holiday gives you a taste of Sweden and a feel for the real & fictional locations featured in the books & films. We have carefully selected the hotels to be close to the action and to recreate some of the feelings in the book. Hedeby is a fictional town and Östersund goes some way to re-creating Hedeby in real life. It's not essential for the holiday, but if you would like to take part in a guided Stockholm Millenium Tour, visit various locations from the book and films there is a guided tour in English on Saturdays. Book / enquire about this holidayItinerary Days 1 to 4 Stockholm Columbus Hotel - an excellent small and personal hotel located approx 2 minutes walk from 12 Fiskargatan the location of Lisbeth Salenders new apartment and on the same street as Kvarnen Pub where Mikael Blomqkvist and his colleagues at Millennium share a beer after work. The hotel is in a listed building from 1780 and on the fashionable island of Södermalm. The building was converted into the Columbus Hotel in 1976 and fully refurnished just 2 years ago. Just 10 mins walk from the centrally located Gamla Stan (Old Town) and 2 mins from the nearest underground station.
Day 4
Day 4 to 6 Follow Mikael Blomkvist footstep’s, leaving Stockholm in the wake of the Wennerström libel case and travelling north by train to meet with Henrik Vanger. Experience the winter environment where Blomkvist began researching the Vanger family (Hedeby is a fictional village several hours by train from Stockholm). Östersund and Hotel Gamlateatern go some way to recreating that genuine Swedish winter feeling.
Shop and explore Hedeby (Östersund) just like Blomqvist did on his arrival. Relax and enjoy the calming winter in Northern Sweden or take in the sights and sounds of Östersund and the surrounding area. The Vangar Estate is quite remote and the log cabin Blomqvist lived in does not have the creature comforts of Gamlateatern which offers a high standard of comfort and personal service in the centre of Östersund, approx 560km (330 miles) from Stockholm. Gamlateatern is one of Europe's oldest wooden buildings, steeped in history and was converted into a 64 bedroom 4 star hotel in 1992. A major renovation was completed in 2011. Price from £995 per person based on 2 adults
