Fly Drive - South Sweden

Southern Sweden has an incredible amount of history & culture. The south eastern tip of Skåne is home to Karlaby Kro, Simrishamn and Ystad, home of Kurt Wallander the famous Swedish police detective. Sandy beaches, picturesque villages and famous gardens all add to the summer attractions.

Karlskrona is the home of Sweden's naval fleet and this city of islands has been recorded by UNESCO as 'irreplaceable'. Boat tours, museums and more coastal attractions make this one of Sweden's most popular summer destinations.

The all new spectacular Kosta Art Hotel is located in the famous Kingdom of Crystal, just 1hr from Karlskrona. The Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket) is home to many of Sweden's famous glass works with a stunning array of wine glasses, kitchenware and home decorations. Make sure you leave some room in your suitcase for the journey home!

Karlskrona is on the UNESCO World Heritage list as an outstanding example of a 17th Century planned naval city. Ship building, architecture and town planning have attracted international attention since the 18th century and Karlskrona is proud to be one of Sweden's most popular summer destinations. The naval base and ship yard are still in use today and Karlskrona is home to Sweden's naval fleet. A myriad of beaches and bathing spots are located in the city centre and scattered across the 1,650 or so islands of the Karlskrona Archipelago, which is well served during the summer by boats departing from the city centre harbour. Other activities & attractions include the Marine Museum and The Admiralty Church (Sweden's largest wooden church). If you travel to Sweden with young children Vämöparken has a small range of farm animals, an excellent playground and a maze to negotiate. You will also find 'over-sized' chess and ludo to keep the big child in you entertained! Read more about our trip to Karlskrona in our blog entry 14 April 2009. You will be accommodated at the Clarion Collection Hotel Carlscrona, which is on the quay side in the centre of Karlskrona.

In the middle of the Kingdom of Crystal (locally called Glasriket) you will find the summer’s answer to ICE HOTEL. The Kosta Boda Art Hotel is now complete (visited by Simply Sweden April 2009) and is made of glass and stone. The unique decorations are made by the world famous artists of Kosta Boda Glassworks, and there is a lot of glass! The illuminated glass art on the hotel facade required 5 tonnes of glass & all in all a hundred tonnes of glass will surprise you in various forms, shapes and dazzling colours. Pamper yourself with a massage or a swim in the indoor or outdoor swimming pools. Relax in a Jacuzzi or sauna or experiment with a touch of glass blowing. The Glass Bar is cobalt blue and the tables and chairs carefully designed to reflect light from the glass lights above. If you choose to eat at the Kosta Boda Art Hotel you will be entertained by the professional glass blowers of Kosta Boda performing on a stage.
