What is so special about winter in Lapland?
Many things. Deep pure white snow, the Northern Lights, magical forests, wilderness log cabins, traditional activities, reindeer and much more. Lapland feels like a dream!

Can I see the Northern Lights in Lapland?
Yes. Lapland is widely recognised as one of the best places on Earth to see the Northern Lights. During 2011 we had a customer who spent 6 nights in Lapland and saw them 5 out of 6 nights! 2011/12 was regarded as the best year in decades and 2012/13 is predicted to be as good, if not better, than 2011/12.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights can be in seen in Lapland from September to April. Some of our northern lights holidays are available from September (Norwegian Fjords Cruise) but most start in December as this is when Lapland has the best snow conditions. For the best viewing conditions the sky needs to be clear and you need to be away from artificial light such as street lighting. Although visible during all phases of the moon, the light from a full moon can hide some of the effects. The period either side of a new moon is recognised as the best time to see the Northern Lights. The New Moon dates for 2012/13 are 29Sep, 29Oct, 28Nov, 28Dec, 26Jan, 25Feb & 27Mar.

Where is Lapland?
Lapland stretches across the northern parts of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. We specialise in holidays to Norway and Sweden.

What clothing do I need?
Dressing correctly in this environment is extremely important for you to be able to fully enjoy the magic of Swedish Lapland. Many of our holidays include warm outer clothing so before you go out and buy any expensive winter clothes please speak to one of our experts. We have been there and used the clothing available. We want to share our experiences with you!
First layer
This should be a thin layer that hugs the body. It should be designed to take moisture away from the body and be made of synthetic material or wool (not cotton). There are some excellent products on the market. Woolen garments are widely regarded as the best items. Woolen socks provide great protection for the feet.
Middle layer(s)
Could be a single layer or several thin layers. It is important that each layer fits over the next one without restricting movement. Fleeces, wool and other insulating material works well.
Outer layer
Often provided during your holiday. This should consist of wind and waterproof material and be insulating. This will be the thickest layer. Jacket with hood, snow trousers and mittens / gloves, hat and scarf.

Traditions
Lapland is steeped in tradition and is home to 20,000 Sami of which 2,000 are traditional reindeer herders. Arts & Craft feature heavily in the Sami culture along with hunting, fishing & traditional folk singing called (yoik). We have both summer & winter activities that allow you to experience traditional Sami life. During the winter we have Sami excursions and during the summer the Inland Railway tourist line runs through traditional Sami locations including Jokkmokk.
