Pine Bay Lodge

Experience the magic of the frozen Luleå Archipelago in the Bay of Bothnia between Sweden & Finland. Visit some of the 1,312 islands and the extraordinary pack ice.

Overview

Pine Bay Lodge (Furufjärden in Swedish) is the perfect location to for a short break under the northern lights corridor in Swedish Lapland. Located in the heart of the Luleå Archipelago in the Bay of Bothnia on Sweden’s  east coast, this cosy lodge offers great opportunities to explore the unique environment of this ice covered archipelago and the Boreal Forest.

During the winter months the metre thick ice is the base for many of the activities at Pine Bay Lodge and the pack ice, or ice wall, has proved to be a major attraction. No one quite knows how it will look or where it will from day to day. The size, shape and location of the pack ice is determined by the wind and sea currents. Other activities include snowshoes, husky sledding, snowmobiles and ice fishing.

Pine Bay Lodge has just 8 comfortable hotel standard rooms all of which are en-suite. The focus of the lodge is the open plan lounge and dining room with a large open fire – a place to relax and enjoy conversation following a day in the snow.

Your meals at Pine Bay Lodge form an important part of your stay and although they are known to be interrupted by the northern lights, head chef Frans Hedblad takes immense pride in producing mouth water meals from locally produced food. The taste of Swedish Lapland is well known with exclusive ingredients such as reindeer, moose, cloudberries, arctic char and local caviar (löjrom) to mention a few. As with any good restaurant, wines are chosen carefully to match your meal.

Accommodation

Pine Bay Lodge - Swedish Lapland

Pine Bay Lodge (Furufjärden in Swedish) is a small homely lodge, in a traditional red-cottage style, on the shores of the Luleå archipelago, just 30 mins from Luleå city. The archipelago is made up on 1300 islands and just 100 permanent residents. During the winter months the sea ice can be up to 1m thick, and ice roads are ploughed into the ice, making the archipelago more accessible during the winter than in the summer.

The focus of the lodge is the open plan lounge and dining room with a large open fire – a place to relax and enjoy conversation following a day in the snow. There are just 8 newly renovated ensuite bedrooms and for those who can’t quite escape wireless internet is available. A wood-fired sauna evening is included.
