Enjoy this intriguing and scenic island at your own pace including time in the Viking city of Visby and the lush countryside. You decide.
Being on the same latitude as Edinburgh and Aberdeen, but also sheltered by the bulk of Sweden and the rest of mainland Europe, Gotland enjoys longer summers and marginally milder winters than most parts of mainland Sweden.
This has made Gotland a popular Swedish holiday island. Located in the Baltic Sea approximately 100 miles south of Stockholm, Gotland is Sweden’s largest island at a little over 100 miles long. The national park, and over 100 nature reserves, create an intense experience of the true beauty of nature as dramatic cliffs, rare birds, bogs and marshes are protected for future generations.
A very deep Viking history provides an endless array of attractions and places of interest. This has been recognised by UNESCO who have made the capital of Gotland, Visby, a world heritage site. Visby was an important centre for the Vikings between the 12th and 14th centuries and is currently the best-preserved fortified commercial city in northern Europe. Fårö (Sheep Island) is one of Gotlands major attractions.
Accessible only by a five minute free car ferry, you could easily spend a day or more visiting Fårö. When the sun is shining the long uncluttered sandy beaches on the northern tip provide an irresistible draw for those looking for a little peace and quiet. This is not far from Fårö lighthouse which was built on the eastern most tip of the island in 1847.

Wisby Hotel is perfectly located in the centre of Visby so exploring is a piece of cake! The centre of Visby is protected from intruders by the medieval city walls, no longer required but a symbol of the history and culture that Visby has to offer. The Hotel was completely refurbished in 2007 maintaining the historical heritage in a modern and comfortable environment.
The airport is just 4km from the city centre, the harbour and ferry terminal are just a short walk away and the beach is just a couple of minutes’ stroll. The tourist information centre, the main point of contact for activities and excursions, is located by the harbour.
