Gothenburg and the Weather Islands

Explore the gateway to West Sweden, the cultural city of Gothenburg and Sweden's most westerly islands, the Weather Islands.

Overview

They are called the Weather Islands for a reason! This short 4 night holiday combines the cosmopolitan city of Gothenburg (the gateway to West Sweden) with the rugged nature of the Weather Islands (one of Simply Sweden's favourite locations in Sweden), but also has the flexibility to include more of the West Coast and beyond.

Gothenburg is a compact city where everything is within easy walking distance or accessible by the city's extensive tram network. For a taste of local life walk round the cobbled streets of Haga and enjoy a 'fika' (coffee and pastry) in a local cafe.

The Weather Islands are Sweden's most westerly islands, exposed to the elements of Skagerrak (the stretch of water between Denmark, Sweden and Norway) and as their name suggests, the weather is naturally unpredictable. Combined with the cosy atmosphere of the guest house, the welcoming staff, the warming food, the famous old pilot's station and the scenic walks, we believe you will fall in love with the Weather Islands.

A small and personal hotel, with just 77 rooms, in the heart of Gothenburg that is bursting with character in an Art Nouveau style. The building dates from 1852 and now houses recently renovated individually decorated rooms across 4 floors.

During the afternoon and early evening you will always find complimentary tea, coffee and cake (known locally as afternoon ‘fika’). Your stay in Sweden is not complete without ‘fika’! Gothenburg Central Station is just 350m away and the shops, bars and restaurants are even closer.

Weather Islands - West Sweden

Sweden's most westerly islands are rugged, raw and incredibly beautiful. Unprotected from nature’s elements this collection of islands lie some 10 nautical miles from the mainland. During the 18th and 19th centuries the need for greater safety at sea meant these inhospitable islands became home to an extended lighthouse and pilot service. In 1965 the lighthouse was fully automated and the pilots returned to the main land.

Today there is an excellent restaurant complemented by a comfortable inn with hot tubs and sauna looking out across the small harbour. The only way to reach the islands is by a special boat service and you may be lucky enough to see some seals. The journey takes approx. 30mins.

You are offered a warm welcome as you step ashore in the sheltered harbour and then you will check in to your room. Standard rooms have shared bathroom facilities and the superior rooms are all ensuite – please ask us for an upgrade. Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes as you will have plenty of time to follow the many paths zig-zagging across the islands.
