Driving on Ice - Swedish Lapland

Experience driving on ice with the professionals in Arjeplog. This is where the car manufacturers come for winter testing.

Overview

Arjeplog has roots dating back to the last ice age. The indigenous Sami and their vast herds of reindeer roam free through the surrounding forests and across the mountains towards the Norwegian border. The Silver Museum tells the story of Arjeplog, the brief silver mining industry and features artefacts of Sami silver highlighting the importance of silver in the Sami culture. Today, during the cold dark winter months, Arjeplog has the full attention of the motor industry as well known car manufactures flock to this frozen landscape to test the durability of their cars in a harsh winter environment. During the week Arjeplog is full of delegates representing car manufacturers from across the globe. At the weekend business travellers give way to leisure guests who come to drive on these famous ice tracks.

In Arjeplog you can enjoy a breath-taking weekend with two full days of petrol fuelled activities. Experience the thrill of ice driving under the guidance of a professional instructor, seek an adrenalin rush racing go-karts around a frozen lake, keep your hands on the wheel rallying on ice and drive  snowmobiles through the magical forests of Swedish Lapland with a wilderness guide.

These exciting ice based activities take place on lakes frozen with a metre thick layer of ice which can safely carry a load of up to 100 tonnes. Ice is an amazing natural resource and just 20cm thick ice has immense strength under the right conditions.
