Mountain Escape - Fjällnäs Reserve (2011)

Fjällnäs is Sweden’s oldest mountain hotel and is an exclusive sanctuary where you can experience continual, dramatic changes of nature high in the mountains on the Norwegian border. Living with this unspoilt wilderness right on the doorstep is one of the main luxuries of staying at Fjällnäs. The air is pure, the scenery unspoilt and the mountains spectacular. When Fjällnäs’s first visitors arrived more than 130 years ago, they were attracted by the pure, unspoilt, beauty – and this is still the same today.

Only by coming so close to this total wilderness, can you truly understand its primitive power, its savage beauty. It is a strange and rare landscape, created by the movements of the ice sheet nine thousand years ago. In some places the panoramic views stretch for at least 200 km in every direction. And with more than 60 mountain peaks, more than 300 km of prepared Nordic ski trails, and countless marked hiking tracks, you will never have to cover the same ground twice. As this fine hotel is high in the mountains you may even catch sight of the Northern Lights as they dance across the sky in colourful ribbons of blues, yellows and greens.

At Fjällnäs, each building has its own story, its own life. The experience of staying at Fjällnäs varies with the changes in Nature. When the first visitors, seekers of fresh air, from Europe’s major cities, made their way to Fjällnäs more than 130 years ago, they came to enjoy the clear air and the untouched beauty. The same is true of today’s visitors, who enjoy the same unspoiled nature, in a resort whose facilities and accommodations are characterised by architecture in tune with the surroundings, solid craftsmanship, and natural materials reflecting the values of Nature.

An almost out-of-body feeling comes over you when, as you arrive at the same level as the clear waters of the mountain lake, you sink deep into your own thoughts. Mii gullo? means “How are you?” in Sami, and this phrase, expressing gentle enquiry and genuine interest, permeates every aspect of our exclusive spa, Mii Gullo Spa. Here, Fjällnäs has gathered knowledge from all over the world to replenish your vital force after a tough day out on the mountain. Mio Gullo Spa is your protected world of calm and relaxation, where our unique and secret essences merge with the intense heat of the stones

Welcome to our country, our mountains, and experience how your senses become alive in this immense and unspoilt wilderness.

Itinerary
Day 1
Fly from the UK to Oslo. Stay at the centrally located Royal Christiania Hotel, just 100m from the Central Station in Oslo and is close to the major shopping and entertainment districts. All the major tourist attractions are within easy reach. The water front is less than 10mins walk away. The history of Oslo dates back to 1000AD and can be found in Gamlebyen (Old Town). The Viking Ship museum houses the world's two best-preserved wooden Viking ships built in the 9th century. As a Scandinavian city it will come as no surprise that architecture and design feature heavily and the The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design is arguably the best place to start!

Day 2
Morning train between Oslo and Roros where you will be met by a representative from Fjällnäs for your transfer to Fjällnäs Reserve. Welcome to the Swedish Mountains, the impressive views and the warm welcoming atmosphere of Fjällnäs. Lunch and check in to your room. The price below is for a standard double room. If your looking for a little bit more luxury we recommend the superior double rooms. Afternoon to relax and explore. Snow shoes are one of the most popular ways to experience the virgin snow.

Day 3
After breakfast you have a 4hr guided snowmobile tour of the Swedish Mountains. Choose whether to share a snowmobile or drive your own. You must be in possession of a driving licence valid in Sweden. There are several snowmobile tracks giving good access to the mountains. You many even have the chance to create your own tracks through powder snow. Afternoon to relax, enjoy the SPA and soak up the slow pace of life in Sweden away from the big cities.

Day 4
During the morning there is a 1hr husky excursion, where you also have the chance to drive your own husky sled. The eager dogs fall silent the moment the sled starts to glide silently over the snow. By this point you will no doubt have found and enjoyed the facilities of the Mii Gullo Spa, now it is time for a 50min Fjällnäs Starrtjärnen massage. During the evening don't forget to look to the night skies and with any luck the northern lights will be dancing across the sky. If they're not, you'll find a sky of glittering stars not visible from the UK.
