Castles and Manor Houses
Drive into the long history of Sweden. We are giving you the opportunity
to see just a small part of it. You will spend your time in some of
the most historically important places that have defined the Swedish
culture of today. map
Day 1 to 3 (approx 50 miles Stockholm Arlanda airport to
Gimo)
Gimo Herrgård **** (country manor) originates from the 1700’s and was
the first manor house to be built in the Gustavian style, when iron
and forest industries were the largest source of income. It is situated
at the end of an impressive drive, by a beautiful lake and surrounded by
ancient forests. The historic City of Uppsala is not far away with an
impressive cathedral (Domkyrkan) and a castle that dominates the
skyline. Gamla (Old) Uppsala is widely regarded as one of the most
important historical sites in Sweden.
Day 3 to 5 (approx 98 miles)
From the 1640’s, Sundbyholm Slott is situated on the southern shore
of Lake Mälaren. It was built by the Admiral of the Navy Karl Karlsson
Gyllenhielm who was greatly respected for his forward looking ideas.
In 1629 he established the first public elementary school
200 years prior to the Swedish public school reform. Sundbyholm estate
has many attractions including the Castle, the Manor House, the
Coachman's Old Quarters, the Estate Residence and the School Museum.
Day 5 to 7 (approx 100 miles)
A unique hotel in one of Sweden’s oldest buildings just a short walk
from the narrow historic alleys of Vadstena. Vadstena Klosterhotellet
**** is an imposing 13th century convent and the hotel is largely located in
the same medieval buildings. The rooms retain many of their original
features and the pupils of the Vadstena Academy often hold opera rehearsals,
much to the delight of the guests. The medieval town of Hästholmen is
just a short distance away and Simply Sweden recommends a visit to St
Birgitta's convent.

incorporated into your holiday
Ulfshyttan Herrgård
The original Ulfshyttan Herrgård was established in the 17th century
and has since been renovated but ruins remain of an original
blast-furnace. It was originally the home of the works manager and iron
master. Crown Prince, HRH Gustav VI Adolf and his wife, Crown Princess
Margareta, were guests at the manor.
Mauritzberg Slott
****
Mauritzberg Slott (castle) has an extremely long and interesting history.
It appeared in history books for the first time during the 1700’s under
the name of Björnsätter. The actual building was constructed
in 1725 and lies on a cliff over the Bråviken coastline. The manor
has been restored and refurbished, faithfully preserving the original
environment.
